Hazel Bluff plans new hall
Les Dunford E&C STAFF
TOWN and COUNTRY, Monday, June 8, 2009
They have talked about it since 2002, and been fundraising ever since. This summer, it will become reality.
The Hazel Bluff Community Hall Society are moving ahead to have a new hall built on the hill at Hazel Bluff west of Westlock next to Highway 18. The building will replace the old and much used existing hall on the same grounds just east of the Hazel Bluff United Church. The sod turning event to kick off the project will take place 6:30 p.m. Thursday evening, June 25, with dignitaries including Barrhead-Morinville-Westlock MLA Ken Kowalski taking part. Meanwhile this coming Friday, June 12, the Society will be holding a Farmer’s Day picnic with a potluck supper at 6 p.m. There, more of the plans for the hall will be revealed, including projected costs, etc.
United Farmers of Alberta (UFA) will be in charge of construction of the project, with Bill Hutchings, Construction Manager for UFA Construction in charge. UFA is helping to build the rural landscape of Alberta, and this project is in many ways in keeping with their own (UFA) 100-year anniversary. The old hall will be used by the next door Hazel Bluff United Church for their 100-year anniversary which is also this year.
Eva Byvank, one of the pioneers of the area says the original homesteaders thought there was need for a hall in the area back 80 years or so ago. The first event in the then-new hall was for her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ern Stanton’s 25th wedding anniversary.
The church, still in regular use today was built in 1909 to serve the pioneers of the five miles west of the present town of Westlock. This was still half a decade ahead of the existence of Westlock. It wasn’t long before the same pioneers in the community who built the church felt the need for a hall as well, and in 1926, a motion was passed to build community hall. By 1932, the little hall, which is still much used today, was in operation.
Today, however, after many years of continuous use, the old hall is showing its age and needs replacing. The Hazel Bluff Community Club in a letter circulated to prospective donators recently notes, “As a gathering place, Hazel Bluff is uniquely attractive because we not only provide a hall, but also camping area, ball diamond and playground. This type and size of facility is not otherwise available in the area. Building a replacement hall at Hazel Bluff does not change the logistics of hall use I the area and our hall has a proven track record of being able to sustain itself with rentals and fundraisers.”
Many have found it ideal for summer use for family reunions, and the hall and grounds are booked solid during the summer months. The location, adjacent to the highway and nearby to Westlock makes it both isolated and accessible at the same time.
Rose Bibby, one of the current members of the Hazel Bluff Community Club notes support for the hall can be realized by reading the list of original directors and former and present board members. David Cross, Nard Shaver and Watson Stanton had a vision and were there in the beginning. Their names and many others like Lyons, Stanley, Binny, Cameron and MacDougall and others are repetitive over the years with many of the present board members.
The start up time for the new hall is scheduled for Canada Day, July 1, with the hall operational by next spring, 2010. The new hall will be pretty much the same size as the existing hall. And, in case anyone was wondering about the old hall, a portion of it will be incorporated in the new hall. The old dance floor will be taken up, sanded, refinished and used as a recognition wall in the new Hazel Bluff Community Centre.

We are 100 - UFA Co-operative Limited Founded in Jan. 1909
Headquartered in Calgary with locations across Western Canada, UFA will mark this important milestone by hosting centennial grassroots events this summer in some of their operating communities.
An interactive exhibit that traces the 100-year history of UFA, and how it has met the changing needs of rural Alberta, will run at the Provincial Archives of Alberta from January through March.
A hardcover centennial book will feature a photographic retrospective of UFA and the people and communities it serves. In addition, UFA Farm and Ranch Supply stores will sell a variety of promotional items commemorating
the centennial.
A logo, representative of an overall snap worn by farmers 100 years ago, has been installed at UFA’s Calgary Corporate Office as a visual symbol of the hard and honest work embraced by the organization. The centennial logo incorporates UFA signature colours of orange and green, and includes an outline of the province of Alberta and a maple leaf. Look for it and the centennial theme “Celebrating our Past, Energizing our Present, Inspiring our Future” throughout the year.
